Yes. Gateway Community School is recognized as a national demonstration site for its implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). We are focused on providing structure, teaching our expectations, observing students, interacting positively, and correcting behavior fluently.
Every day in the Welcome Room our students are warmly greeted and checked in by the school staff. Students turn in their electronic devices and personal belongings prior to entering the campus. These items are all checked in, locked, and returned to students upon dismissal.
Gateway Community School is a small, closed campus. All school staff are always actively engaging with and supervising students. In addition to our teachers and paraeducators, there are 3 behaviorists, 4 counselors, 4 campus assistants, and 2 administrators who are all available to supervise and support students.
Gateway Community School also implements restorative practices. We hold community circles to build students understanding of one another. We also use similar approaches to address instances of harm. We know that these practices teach our students the important skills of problems-solving and living in a community.
