CTE Credential

The Career Technical Education Credential (DSC CTE) allows candidates to teach in grades 12 and below and in classes organized primarily for adults, in career technical, trade or vocational courses. 


The CTE Full-year Credential Program is for candidates who hold a Preliminary DSC CTE credential OR a Preliminary Special Subjects (ROTC) credential.

  • If you possess a CTE Preliminary Credential and need to clear it, please go to Step 2

OBTAIN YOUR PRELIMINARY CREDENTIAL

Preliminary Credential

Individuals first apply for a “preliminary” credential based mainly on their work experience aligned to an industry sector. The preliminary credential is valid for 3 yearsThe preliminary credential is valid for 3 years. Choose one of the options below to begin the preliminary credential application process.

OBTAIN YOUR CLEAR CREDENTIAL

Clear Credential

During the 3 years of the preliminary credential timeframe, additional requirements must be completed to earn the final credential called a "clear". To satisfy the credential requirement, you must be employed in a CTE teaching position and complete a CTE program.

The VCOE CTE Clear Credential program consists of three courses, Fall, Spring, and Summer. Once a clear credential is earned, it includes an authorization to teach to English Learners, is valid for five years, and is renewable online through the CTC's website.

CTE Equivalency Credential Program

The CTE Equivalency Credential Program grants equivalencies to those candidates who hold both a Preliminary CTE Credential and a California Preliminary or Clear Single or Multiple Subject credential (w/ELA1, ELAM, ELAS, ELAE or Clear CLAD).

CTE Equivalency Credential candidates should be employed in a teaching assignment requiring the CTE credential or have access to students that allow you to demonstrate skills required by program standards. Assignments less than one semester (e.g., day-to-day substitute teaching) are not eligible teaching assignments.


Program Requirements*:

Online Classes: Approximately 7 hours each course

  • History and Foundations of CTE: CTE history as well as the future of CTE for California
  • Classroom and Laboratory Management: Focus on the safe and legal practices in the workplace and school
  • Portfolio E Contents: You will complete a professional portfolio that will serve as documentation of instructional practices aligned to applicable CTE standards. The portfolio includes a teaching plan, formal observation completed by your employer, work from focus students, analysis of student work, reflection, and curriculum map.
